The Jaipur Development Authority organized a competition for Jawahar Memorial Circle in 1988. Saakaar Foundation’s entry won a prize in the competition. The circular site measures 56 acres. It is situated at the crossing of Jawaharlal Nehru Marg and the southern bye-pass near Hotel Clark Amber. The entire site is divided into: the internal circle and the outer ring. The internal circle has been designed on a geometric pattern like Mughal Gardens, and the outer ring is in free lines as in the Japanese style of gardens.
The existing roundabout at the entry of this prestigious garden is proposed to be developed as a circular platform with the installation of a double life-size statue of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. An overbridge passing above the approaching road would serve as the entrance gate to this unique garden. To facilitate development in phases and create interest for persons of different age-groups, the outer ring is divided into four functional segments: Children’s Park, Science Park, Botanical Park and Rock Park. The internal circle is planned on a geometrical pattern like the Lake Garden at Amer Palace in Jaipur. To cut it off from traffic pollution, an artificial geometric hillock was proposed to be developed on the outer periphery.
In the long stretch of the road from Patiala to Bathinda, there was no place for travellers to sit, eat and relax. So, the Punjab Tourism Development Corporation decided to establish a resort on this route to promote the tourism sector. The Chandni Tourist Resort in Nadampur is located on a triangulated site bounded by the Ghaggar main canal and a tail race channel.
The flowing water along the periphery and the ever changing enchantment of the flora and fauna make it an ideal tourist spot. The major design constraint was that the building should not disturb the natural beauty of the area and, at the same time, should stand out visually in the wooded site.
Located on a 398-acre site, the Kotbilla Resort constitutes a swimming pool, amusement park, club house, golf club, and landscaped gardens. This undulatory site is situated at the foothills of the Shivalik Mountains. The topography of the site was the prime factor taken into the consideration while designing the resort and its premises.
The site is approached from two gates: a main gate on the southern side and a second gate on the western side. An eroded bed of a seasonal rivulet at the site was dammed to create an artificial lake and one sunken garden. Two cottages were designed in one of the lakes to appear as a floating hutment. To attract children, several games were either designed at the site or installed. An existing ditch on-site was utilized to create a fenced duck pond. The pond has a cave-like structure where ducks can take shelter.
A waterfall is designed at the highest point, from where water sheets fall on an interesting configuration of steps. Circular decks around another water body allow tourists to sit and enjoy the falling water. One corner of this sunken garden is transformed into an amphitheatre with a mini stage in the front, meant for small shows and theatrical performances.
Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation organized a competition to select the design for the proposed KVB Reddy Memorial in Kurnool. It was raised in the memory of the late K Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy, former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. In all, 26 entries were received. A high-level committee comprising architects, politicians, and the experts selected the design entry of Saakaar Foundation for the prize.
The whole site was divided into different zones. Each zone depicts the life and philosophy of Bhaskar Reddy in its own way. The memorial is placed at the centre of the site, called the homage zone. Other zones are recreational, agricultural and peaceful.
J&K Housing Corporation was entrusted with the job of selecting the design and building a befitting memorial. So the corporation organized a national-level design competition for the ‘Police Memorial’ to be built near the railway station in Jammu. Around 10 architectural firms submitted their entries from all over the country. A high-level jury comprising eminent architects, artists and police officers decided to award the first prize jointly to two architects, Surinder Bahga and Ashok Purie, because combining two entries enable the raising of a befitting memorial.
The focus of the design is a pylon structure projecting outward, supporting a symbolic canopy. It is formed out of steel ropes, which apparently help restrain the pylons towards the middle. In the centre, a flame is placed under the canopy which is symbolic of the life of the policeman that gives light to its surroundings. The memorial is placed on a raised platform on the site. The landscape proposal lends a disciplined character to the whole development. The project received the ‘Outstanding Concrete Structure Award’ from Indian Concrete Institute.
Treehouse Dwarka Hotel and Club is unique amongst the hotels in Neemrana, Rajasthan. Spread over 10 acres with 24 rooms, it is a place to relax, repose and re-energize. Located on NH 8, it is a weekend getaway resort. It was conceived in collaboration with Late Architect Manmohan Sharma. The site is lower than the highway. The building was given a citadel look with a touch of Rajasthan architecture.
The hotel is divided into two blocks: the reception and club area and block of guest rooms. Both buildings are connected by a corridor consisting of a wooden pergola and fiberglass. Open-air theatre with night lighting has been provided for extracurricular activities. An outdoor swimming pool with an open deck adds to the scenic beauty of the site. Boundary wall and terraces are covered with planters or creepers. Plantation along the path right from the entrance, highlights the vista from the main entrance to the hotel porch.
There was a dire need for a convention centre in Panchkula which would host both public and private events and encourage development in tourism, cultural activities, social gatherings, etc.
The Red Bishop Convention Centre is situated on Chandigarh-Panchkula Highway in Sector 1 of Panchkula. It was conceived by the Haryana Tourism Corporation. It was inaugurated by the former Chief Minister of Haryana, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, on August 7, 2014. The building has been built on a five-acre site near the existing complex.
A large multipurpose hall, with a capacity of 900 persons, was conceptualized to meet the client’s requirements for the building. It was aimed to match the adjoining Red Bishop Tourist Complex. The centre has access from three different gates to segregate the traffic.
